The Conservative government recently (in the week commencing Monday 29th April 2024) launched a consultation on a green paper that they written called “Modernising support for independent living: the health and disability green paper”, which I have broadly called a consultation on personal independence payment (PIP).
Personal independence payment (PIP) is a non-means tested cash benefit which is paid to some disabled people after an assessment process with the stated aim of helping disabled people meet the extra costs of being disabled. It is currently paid 4-weekly in cash directly to the disabled person’s bank account. There are two elements to PIP daily living and mobility which can be awarded at a lower or higher (enhanced rate) with the lower and higher/enhanced rates being awarded different amounts of money each week. The current rates are available here https://www.gov.uk/pip/how-much-youll-get.
The consultation is available here https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/modernising-support-for-independent-living-the-health-and-disability-green-paper/modernising-support-for-independent-living-the-health-and-disability-green-paper. Alternative formats for the consultation are available here https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/modernising-support-for-independent-living-the-health-and-disability-green-paper.
The consultation is lengthy. I emailed a my response rather than submit it through the online form, partly because my response to the consultation is also lengthy. I have decided to share it here as it may be of interest to other people and I want to be open about what I said to the consultation. (I have included it in word format (primarily because I think that this may be helpful to people who use screen readers) and embedded below as a PDF document.
